The UV Smart story in a nutshell.
UV Smart was founded in 2017 by Daan Hoek and Thijs Kea. The idea of disinfecting medical equipment came about when one of the founders noticed that people were cleaning their phones with wipes on an airplane. He thought that UV light could be faster, safer and more effective than wipes. After further research, however, it became clear that there is a great and increasing need in the medical world for the disinfection of commonly used medical instruments and equipment. After all, resistant bacteria and viruses (a.o. MRSA, VRE, CRE and corona viruses) associated with circulation of patients and increased use of medical equipment pose a significant risk to the safety of both patients and caregivers.
After about 4 years of R&D, UV Smart launched its first product in early 2020: the D25. This handy mobile device has been specially developed for validated disinfection of medical instruments and equipment with UV-C light. In view of the COVID-19 crisis, the team released a derived Emergency version of the D25 at the end of March 2020 under great time pressure. Clinical validation of the next device, the D60, is ongoing. This device is slightly larger and is intended for disinfecting endoscopes and ultrasound heads. UV Smart expects to introduce the D60 in the course of 2021.
